Life of a Creative Writing Grad Student [and knitter]

The occasional opining of a sleep-deprived grad student, with cheese.

Well, the rain finally stopped. I've now graded three first reads more than I absolutely had to, I'm about two second reads ahead, I've done all my reviews for the week, and I've done about twice as many critiques as I need to have done for the week. How's that sound for playing catch up? Not too shabby, if I say so myself.

I've not done my readings for Feminism yet, or read through the second have of the short stories for Monday. Feminism gets done after dinner, which is soon, and then I'll do the preliminary reading of the stories. They all get read once for general understanding before I begin to comment. Unless things just leap off the page at me and scream, "Circle me, I don't belong here!" That's unusual, but it happens.

One person out of fourteen said the modular story I turned in was "grasping at straws" in it's "attempt to be funny." This individual did *not* like it. He wanted me to take out every line with a modicum of humor, and develop a more serious tone when dealing with my characters. To this, I simply shrug. Some people like different styles. If everyone, or even a significant minority, said this kind of thing, I'd think twice about the style of the piece. But everyone else thought the humor ...bye... phone.
