Life of a Creative Writing Grad Student [and knitter]

The occasional opining of a sleep-deprived grad student, with cheese.

Ah, yesterday...

Yesterday was productive. I got half of the stories critiqued for class Monday, and read the other half without critiquing. I couldn't think of anything to say, good or bad, so I've been thinking on them. Tomorrow morning they'll get scribbled on, and I'll be ready for class. Also, I graded some papers (yes, that *does* happen every day, and yes, I *will* be mentioning it all the time), and got together an itinerary for shopping Spree Saturday.

A friend and I went to nearly all the thrift stores in town, in search of clothes and maybe a small end table. We didn't realize the stores would close at five, or we'd have started earlier and hit them all. She found a really nice sweater, original tags still in place, and got it for about eight bucks. It would have cost her twenty-something in the store. She was thrilled. I found a corduroy skirt, beige in color and knee high in length. It's an A skirt that actually does what an A skirt should do. I've never found one like it before, and it was mine for eight bucks. I also got an off-white sweater that opens in front and hangs down to make me look taller. I think it was ten dollars.

At another store, I found a very solid oak end table, with three storage areas: on top, in the drawer, and under the drawer on a nice lower shelf. The cat likes it, too. I put a big pillow on the lower shelf, and she curls up on it when she's in the bedroom. There was another piece of furniture I really liked, and I thought it would fit where I wanted it to go, but I measured it, and it was about a foot and half too long. Good thing I brought the tape measure and all the measurements of my available space. I'd have been a bit unhappy to take it home and find out it didn't work. Even if it was only fifteen bucks. What would I have done with it?

Then we went grocery shopping in preparation for the meal we're all eating at her place tonight. She's making spring rolls. Enough said. I also got my shopping done, and spent a few hours at her place making a cake. Yes, it took us a few hours.

We had a recipe from one of her cookbooks, and we were making the thing from scratch. I was mainly stirring (because that is my favorite kitchen job, right after chopping) and mashing bananas. We got the cake all put together, and it looked more like cookie dough than batter. In fact, it didn't pour at all. It stuck together like ... well, cookie dough. But we went over the recipe, and we'd done all it said we were to do. So we slipped it in the oven and turned the timer on. About halfway through the baking process, she suddenly got this crazy notion that she hadn't put sugar in the cake. She could recall dumping it in, and I hadn't been paying attention to the dry ingredients. So we pull the cake out to taste it. Whoa. No, she hadn't put the sugar in. It tasted like pumpkin seeds and white bread. And there were no pumpkins of any kind in the cake, so this was just beyond strange to us.

We turned off the timer, dumped the cake in the trash, cleaned the bowls, and started over. We each paid attention to the other's mixing as well as our own. We counted ingredients, muttered aloud, went over the list several times. It still came out like cookie dough. But we went ahead with it, because the batter tasted alright. We never tried the fully cooked cake, and tonight will be the grand tasting. I'll let you know how our cake came out.

The menu for tonight is spring rolls, egg drop soup, two kinds of Asian salad, and cake. After eating, we plan to see a movie. Then we'll all go home and think about grading papers.

As a funny aside, we couldn't find my car after we went shopping. The guy had both our carts and was following us around as we searched for the car. In my defense, I had never been to that United Foods before, and the parking lot was both new and large. Also, since neither of us knew where we were, it takes half the blame and half the embarrassment, and puts them elsewhere. So. We thought we'd go toward the right side of the lot, since we remembered coming that way. But it wasn't there. There was another red car, but it wasn't mine. So we turned around and started a systematic up and down maneuver that eventually turned up my red car. It was clear on the other side of the lot. And around a small bend. The guy was at least pretending to be amused, and we got a good laugh out of it on the way to her apartment.

That was yesterday.

Today was slightly different. I returned to the later service this morning, mostly because I couldn't make my eyes stay open when my alarm first went off. Charlotte stayed with me most of last night, so she mewed for her breakfast at eight, and I got up then and prepared for church. Not a bad service, and the elder who always smiles at me was back. He had been on vacation or something I think, although I am not sure. I sat on the left side this morning, which I won't do again. I feel more comfortable on the right side. Creature of habit, I suppose.

It rained again this morning, and into the afternoon. Just stopped about an hour ago, in fact. Some arid desert. I've been told that a wet summer is always followed by a mild winter here. But I've also been told it never rains, so I've got some reservations about believing these folks.

Well, I've gotten confirmation on first reads. We're to do at least twelve a week. I've managed to do twelve of them today in response to that, but the reviews are still lacking. I hope they show up late tonight. I'd like to have them over and done with.

Charlotte has been tamer lately, except for today when she was a jungle thing again. I think it's the rain. She turns crazy when it rains. Runs all over the place at breakneck speeds, uses your back as a springboard, and generally makes a ruckus. At least she's mostly cute when she does this.

That's about all for now. I'm going to see if I can snag some reviews before heading off to eat spring rolls. Mmmmm.

End.
