! Good News !

Well, sort of good. It does not involve the paper that ... still hasn't been written for tomorrow. That will happen when I get off work tonight. I have all the planning outlined with some examples, and it looks like I may be able to focus on this one novel for the large paper at the end. But we'll see how this paper goes. I have something to say, evidence to back myself up, and a theory as to the why it happens. Not bad, and since it deals with fairy tale elements, I may actually be interested in the subject I'm writing about.

[the previous subject was also interesting, but there's a grr involved. i was going to write on biblical allusions in the book (pick one), and the topic even got cleared. but there was nothing really to say other than: "see? biblical allusions! isn't that cool?" in any case, there's a guy in both the N class and the S class, and he is into philosophy and religion. not a bad combo, really. but i live in morbid fear of having ideas hijacked, or of being the second one to come up with a paper topic (of being the hijacker, however innocently). top it off, there's a different guy in the T class who does religion, and so i'm just going to back off on both the N and T classes. of the current grads here, i'm the only one even remotely working with fantasy and or fairy tales, and or the fey. so there is my new niche for these classes. graphic novels are becoming more popular, but not in the T class.]

Which leads me to the second part of this, and to the good news I alluded to in the title. The T class (previously referred to as the DQ class) is the one I have read nothing for this week. I was so silent in class today (we didn't even cover new material. I was just bored out of my mind. Remembered notes taken semesters ago that included the melodramatic high-school phrase "Oh, God, I'm so bored I think I'll die!")... but I was so silent that Prof Z asked me after class if I was having any thoughts on the material. And I nailed it.

Brought up my intention to discuss the translation of a work from graphic novel format to video format, and the transferral (faithful or otherwise) of visual images. He loved the idea, and we talked for brief moment about the concept. So the good news is that BS is alive and well, and that I have a final project: V for Vendetta. My brother, who makes it a point not to read blogs, and will therefore not know I'm talking about him here, saw the movie with me when he was over in my area. We liked it, and he said I probably liked V for the "V speech" he makes at the beginning. He was wrong, but that's beside the point.

The point is that I somewhat recently got to see a movie I'd wanted to see, that I recently decided to write a Pop Cult paper on it for presentation and therefore just purchased both book and DVD (professional development [hi, KM!] is not consumerism, and conferences look damn good on CVs), and now have the perfect setup to write a conference paper over a set of work I like very much, and spend class study time doing it. Hurray!

Oh, and driving up Brownfield at night won't be a problem. Haven't yet driven down it. Probably won't, since I'm not incredibly aware while driving at night. (goal: no night classes next semester, or the one after that. further goal: only three semesters of coursework, total. estimation of success: HA!)

But there's the good news. Now I can read V as closely as it deserves and not feel like I'm wasting time. Because really. Literarure like that needs to be carefully studied, frame by frame, observing each expression, the emphasis placed on certain movements, and the sometimes cleverly overlooked background movements that come back later ... I get to really read it, instead of the cursory "yeah, this kicks ass" read through I gave it the day it arrived. Guess what I'll be doing tonight?

Wrong. I'll be writing this paper. But Friday, watch out!

Love and Peace (and please, no vendettas!)

That is AWESOME that you're working on V for Vendetta! Heath and I finally rented it about a month and a half ago, and we both loved it. (In fact, we decided we loved it so much that we bought it--I envision us watching it again and again.) I think it's a real example of not judging a book/movie by it's cover--just looking at it, I never thought it would be something that I would enjoy. Good luck with your project!

    Miss you lots!
