Sometimes, the Lightbulb Dims

I had a dim bulb moment just now, and for some masochistic reason, I am going to share my momentary foolishness with the world. (This is perhaps another dimming moment...)

It was raining today. A lot. And this means that, in Dirt Town, all intersections are flooded with between 3 to 8 inches of water. The right lanes for driving are underwater, and the people all turn into maniacs, even if they were okay drivers before they encountered water. It was also quite chilly today, when compared with the 90 degree weather we've been having of late. Today was the day I had planned to remain in school until late and try the NITE bus.

Can you see where this is going?

We caught the bus after about 30 minutes of waiting under an overpass and somewhat sheltered from the wind and rain. Much fun. The bus let us off not five feet from my car, which was nice.

When people get into a car that has been out in the cold for a while, the interior fogs up. I have found, in drier times, that opening the window a crack gets rid of the fog much quicker than turning on the A/C. After dropping AMS off, the fog began to creep across the windshield in a manner that could impede my driving.

So I opened the window by about 2 inches. It was no longer raining (just sprinkling) and it wasn't actually all that cold, since I had on a jacket. However, when I got to the intersection turning onto Slide, I apparently didn't slow down enough. I thought I was crawling, but... Water poured into the car from the opened window, drenching the entire left side of my body, from hair to knee. But it gets better. The water also cascaded over my windshield, so I turned on the wipers, which of course pushed all that water right back into the car, and onto me.

Honestly. I can crank out a hefty paper in a weekend, but I can't anticipate that driving down a flooded street with the window open will get me wet? What's wrong with that picture?

Today was the last official class I'm holding for the Thursday freshpuppies. You know, I think I'll take up the good Doctor's lingo and call them Dalmations. That's probably nicer. But my Thursday Dalmations have feasted on cookies and candy, have turned in evaluations, and have made me late for work for the last time this semester. Three cheers or more. But seriously, I had a good time with them today, and a few will probably show up next week to say hi while I'm sitting there dutifully.

Anyway, I'm out of the sopping wet clothes, which are now hanging over my dining room chairs to drip dry over a towel. And I've changed into some nice cozy pjs, so I'm warm again. Now I'm going to make tea and hit the sack, because I've a sneaking suspicion that it's prolonged sleep deprivation behind it all. Who says we grad students don't know how to keep a body healthy? (Put those hands down, y'all! That ain't nice.)

Love and Peace (and fluffy terry cloth bath robes)
