stuff
i made a pie today, as per my to do list. apples of many different kinds [minus the golden delicious which was, on a taste test, not] sliced in a variety of thicknesses. same crumbly toping over a regular 9" pie crust in a regular 9" pie pan. not the flat pizza pie. still has the cheese, though not as much as i usually use. i added a tiny dribble of vanilla extract to the filling. wasn't sure how long to bake it, but i followed the pizza pie rules. crust on the bottom might be a mite soggy. i'm not sure, and can't tell without slicing the pie. oh well.
also made some cranberry jam. am now in possession of three and a half jars of it. one of those jars is going to KM, because she'll be here and can eat it [unless she isn't interested, in which case, more for ... someone else.]. one is going to the dept mom, who threw a surprise birthday party for me last week, complete with strawberry cupcakes with strawberry frosting. that leaves the half jar for me, since it's probably all i can eat before going home early next week. and there's a jar left over. if i knew anything about canning, i wouldn't be worried about a thing, and could store these things forever. but they'll only last about a week, and so i've got to find takers for this stuff.
the jam [which i plan to make for the family as soon as i get home] consists of cranberries [obviously], orange juice, brown sugar, mint [a new addition], and pomegranate seeds [another new addition]. i had some on toast earlier, and it works. i need to figure out this canning thing and actually try it some time. i could have this all year round...
on another culinary note, i made ... soup. that starter kit that intrigued me to no end got used today. one carrot, one potato, one piece of celery, one small onion, one zucchini, one half head of cabbage. to this, i added one leek [kind of oniony, i like], two additional potatoes, many sliced mushrooms, and a can of chicken broth. after roughly an hour of boiling away, the soup was taken off the stove, mashed with a hand mixer, and joined by a tablespoon of margerine.
it's chunky, creamy, stringy. it's mostly pale green, with some dark flecks of leek ends, zucchini peel, and mushroom. some orange flecks of carrot. it can't help but be healthy, since about the only things in it are veggies. there's not enough of anything else to do you any damage. and it smells heavenly. i love cabbage. it tastes pretty good too, see the cabbage comment. but that texture... can we say eeewwwww? it's gloop! glorified veggie gloop. bleck. still, it tastes good, and since i am intimately acquainted with the ingredients, having chopped them all up myself, i am eating it. i had one fourth of it for lunch. i'm working on the second fourth now. tasty, gloopy. gloopy, tasty.
watched v for vendetta and all the accompanying commentaries twice. took several pages of notes. have a basic path for the paper to follow.
still need to do laundry [will have few to no clean clothes by tuesday morning], and to do that i need quarters. i've got three. that's... no loads of laundry. so, monday morning to the bank, go i. monday evening, laundry in the dark. planning is a wonderful thing, yes?
oh well. that's what's up around here.
love and peace
