The smells of Thanksgiving

Well, I haven't actually smelled any of it yet. Dinner is at four. I figure I'll leave at three when this monster pie from hell is finished cooking. Baking. Heating up real good. Whatever. When it's out of the oven.

This is an unusual pie for me. Typically for Thanksgiving, Mom and I make a cherry pie. We don't use canned pie filling, but we do use Pillsbury crusts. I planned to do the same this time around, since I have all the ingredients for it, and it tastes better in my opinion. What I discovered was that, while I had the full accoutrements for filling, I was lacking (severely) in the crust department. So I made my own. How's that for lazy? Didn't have the desire to drive to Wal-mart, so I looked up a crust recipe that didn't require shortening (lacking there, too), and whipped it up. Boy. It was easy, and I've always thought the trick to a good homemade pie crust is that it isn't easy. Which makes the pie crust in that oven a bad homemade pie crust.

And since I couldn't find the same cherries, the filling recipe was different, too. Same premise, but different. In short, this is my first 100% absolutely, purely made from scratch cherry pie. And I'm really scared it'll suck. I'll tell you how it turned out when I get back from the dinner. In the meantime, enjoy your turkey, don't drink too much, and behave.

Oh man, I hope this doesn't suck.

Happy Thanksgiving,
End.
